Most revealing, though, was their choice of language. Managers who used probabilistic terms like sometimes, in general, often, a bit, specifically, to a degree, questionable, on the other hand, and so on, were successful. Managers who preferred the absolutes—always, never, without exception, certainly, neither, only, and must —were not. A surprise, that: all the strong, sure terms that stud the leadership-course lexicon turn out to be a diagnostic mark for failure, whether as the product of a small mind’s wish to simplify or a basic confusion between acting confident and being competent. Here as elsewhere, we risk falling victim to the fundamental attribution error, believing that if the quality of a skilled person is decisiveness, then acting decisively must somehow confer skill. But this is to forget what makes someone expert: openness, avid curiosity, an eye for variation, and a lust for understanding. These are probabilistic, not absolute, virtues.
